Cleansorb founders share a vision of improved oil and gas recovery

When Dr Ralph Harris first met Dr Ian McKay at a London University venture capital backed spin-off, neither could have guessed their careers were about to meet in a common vision.

Yet their shared belief in the potential of in-situ acidizing treatments for oil and gas recovery not only led to ground-breaking technologies. It also led to the creation of their company, Cleansorb. Today, Cleansorb helps its ORCA cleanup and DEEPA stimulation treatment customers achieve proven wellbore production improvements and significant reductions in costs and risk.

Microbiologists by training, the two men took their first in-situ acidizing technology from concept to field trial in just six months. Proved for deep matrix acidizing in the San Andres dolomite formation, the treatments were timely. The oil industry was moving to widespread use of openhole horizontal wells, requiring new types of cleanup systems.

Uniform effect

A Society of Petroleum Engineers paper broadened the technology’s appeal, suggesting it for filter cake cleanup as well as matrix acidizing. Dr Harris and Dr McKay decided the time was right to launch the technology, so that its uniform distribution of cleanup and stimulation fluids could prove itself in fields around the world.

Word spread fast, and the treatments quickly became known for delivering much better performance than traditional HCI. This led to Cleansorb products being selected for high profile offshore projects, including the most prolific gas wells in the world.

Wide recognition

Second and third generation technologies have continually improved the cleanup and stimulation treatment methods. These developments have been widely recognised by the industry, with Cleansorb receiving the prestigious Millennium Product award from the UK Design Council.

Today, with hosts of satisfied operator customers and a growing portfolio of patents, Cleansorb is headquartered in a purpose built wet lab in Guildford. Supported by a team of expert chemists and on-site engineers who all share Dr Harris’ and Dr McKay’s vision, Cleansorb is sure to continue leading the industry in the years ahead.
